Ode to the Arts

Artistic ability cannot be taught. It is not like Math, English, or Social Studies. Anyone can learn those things if they apply themselves. But the true talent to draw, sing, act, or write cannot be taught. Some people can do these things and some simply cannot. But everyone can try. If these things cannot be taught then why do we have classes for them? The answer is because we have teachers that can encourage us to find our niche. They teach us to master our talents. I have met with several teachers on these subjects and they all agree that helping students improve on such wonderful things is truly necessary and amazing. We all have friends with some artistic ability. Don’t they deserve recognition for their talents?
Art is all around us. Someone designed your clothes, the house you live in, your furniture. Someone wrote the music you listen to for enjoyment. Someone sings those songs and someone plays those melodies. You watch television with shows full of accomplished actors and actresses. But do you ever really notice those things? People cheer for athletic ability and congratulate academic achievements. So why not appreciate artistic talent? Next time you walk down the hall be sure to look at the murals as you pass. When the time comes for musicals, plays and band concerts, go and see them. And the next time you are in a classroom with student writing displayed, take the time to stop and read it. None of these tasks will take up much of your time, so why not do them? Art was meant to be appreciated. If it is not, then it may well be gone one day.
